[Evidence-based Presentation] The purpose of the study was to develop of article writing competence scale and effectiveness of application counseling program on the competence and satisfaction for nurses. Researchers developed the instruments on article writing competence scale with Varimax Rotation of Factor Analysis of seven factors, including competence in content fluency, abstract, introduction, literature review, nursing process (intervention & implementation or nursing method), results, and reference list with the Likert 10-point scale. The test-retest reliability of the instruments with intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was .80. This study was conducted at a teaching hospital between March 1, 2003 and Oct. 30, 2006. The nurses' sample received a counseling program that covered case reports, nursing projects, and nursing research. The total sample of 173 nurses included 65 subjects in case reports, 65 subjects nursing projects, and 43 subjects in nursing research. Instruments used included counseling satisfaction, which was scored between 1 and 4. Instruments also included article writing competence scale of case reports, nursing projects, and nursing research, which were scored between 0 and 10. Following counseling program application, results showed: 1) the mean self-evaluation score for case reports increased by a statistically significant (t = -7.37, p<. 001) margin, from 6.08 (SD=1.59) to 7.33 (SD=1.60); 2) the mean self-evaluation score for nursing projects increased by a statistically significant (t = -6.98, p<. 001) margin, from 5.96 (SD=1.66) to 7.40 (SD=1.35); 3) the mean self-evaluation score for nursing research increased by a statistically significant (t = -7.24, p<. 001) margin, from 5.72 (SD=1.35) to 7.33 (SD=0.98); and 4) the mean score for counseling satisfaction was 3.44, with the clinical teaching competency score ranking highest (3.47). Results lead researchers to conclude that implementing this counseling program method could effectively enhance writing competency. Study results should be provided to nurses as a reference when writing articles.
