[Research Presentation] Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in western countries, and it seems it will increase in the future. In Finland, the incidence rate was 115.3 per 100,000 men in 2004, and it was highest in the age 70 - 74 years. Caring for patients with chronic conditions such as prostate cancer is placing new and different demands on patients¦ care and patient education. Prostate cancer is a health problem requiring ongoing management across many years. The purpose of this 4-phase study (2006 -2009) is to analyse prostate cancer patients' illness related knowledge and its structuring. The ultimate goal is to develop prostate cancer patient education to become more empowering. This study belongs to 'Outcomes of Patient Education' - program in the Department of Nursing Science of Turku University in Finland. In the first phase (2006), a systematic literature review will be carried out. This literature review consists of previous researches concerning prostate cancer patients' illness related knowledge and its structuring. In the second phase (2007), patients will be interviewed at the phase of prostate cancer diagnosis. We want to get information of patients' different ways of constructing their illness related knowledge. In the third phase (2008), the instrument measuring prostate cancer patients' illness related knowledge structuring will be developed. This will be based on a systematic review and patients interviews. In the fourth phase (2009), patients' illness related knowledge structuring will be measured with this instrument. The target population consists of all patients receiving prostate cancer diagnosis at a certain time in university hospitals in Finland. In addition, we will be interested in exploring the relationship between outcomes of patient care (i.e. adverse events, quality of life, length of stay) and knowledge structuring. Keywords: patient, prostate cancer, knowledge structuring
