Caring children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) represents a challenge for family caregivers and nurse. They have a physical development, behavioral disabilities or emotional conditions that require assistance related to a interdisciplinary approach much more than others children. Then, I defined as an objective identifying the caregivers? knowledge  about children caring and analyzing the thematic universe from their discourses. The qualitative research was developed to 21 groups of families of children below 12 years old, at outpatient facility and home. We applied the dynamics ?body-knowledge? and ?role play? from creative and sensitivity method inspired in Freire?s philosophy. The results demonstrated that families had a lack of expertise knowledge and their practices were conducted by the adjust-mistake-attempt. The most common health education themes were body handling, medication, use of appliances (e.g., nebulization, thermometer, suctioner). I infer that those families must improve their skills for caring children in a  health education program. Key words: Children. Pediatric nursing. Health education. Note:1 Research conducted with financial support from Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Tecnológico (CNPq)CNPq. 2003-2005.2 Adjunct Professor of Escola de Enfermagem Anna Nery, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Researcher of. Researcher of Pediatric Nursing Nucleus of Research. Post doctoral scholarship at McGill University. Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry. 2005-2006..
