The purpose of this study is to discuss the factors related to the needs of family members caring for patients with tracheostomy. Adopting convenient sampling, there are 154 qualified subjects recruited from the voluntary respiratory care wards located in 5 cities in Taiwan. According to literature review and clinical experiences, the questionnaire with 46 questions was designed and entitled to "Scale for the needs of family members caring for patients with tracheostomy". Statistical analyses include independent t test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regressions. The results of this study revealed that the priority of 5 categories of the needs of thes family members could be sorted descendingly as follows: guarantee need, information need, access-to-patient need, social-support need, and comfort need. The top 5 important items of relatives' needs are as follows: "Able to tell me which service items could be provided for the patients with tracheostomy", "Able to take immediate and proper measures in response to changes of patient's condition", "Able to inform me when patient's condition changes suddenly","When unable to stay in the hospital, I can check the patient's condition by phone",and "Able to let me know in advance when the patient will be transferred or discharged". The main factors to influence the importance of the needs of family members caring for the patients with tracheostomy include relatives' sex, religion, education and patient's age. These results will not only help caring staff to find relatives' needs and understand influential factors, but help relatives face the serious care processes, and in the meantime, touch the valuable concern of humanity. To make proper explanation of the patient's condition to the family members, and satisfy their needs to care for patients will be helpful to keep good relationships between caring staff and relatives, promote the care quality and stablize the patient's conditions.
