The free-standing, gerontology course provides an application of medical-surgical and health promotion practices within an older adult population; this is an internet facilitated  classroom course using WebCT. The course was first introduced using a discussion teaching-learning methodology, Learning Through Discussion. This methodology ultimately was abandoned because both faculty and students believed it did not facilitate student implementation of the nursing process with the older adult population. Revision of the course now uses a hybrid of Problem Based Learning with in-class Case Study Analysis which provides the novice nursing students opportunity to apply nursing knowledge to an older adult population and individual clients in a variety of settings including the acute care medical-surgical nursing unit.
