[22nd International Nursing Research Congress - Research Presentation] Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the sexual experiences, sexual knowledge, sexual attitude and practice of safe sex of female sex workers.
Methods: Forty-two female sex workers in the Kaohsiung area were chosen through purposive sampling in this study. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data from the subjects, and valid data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t testing, Pearson product-moment correlation and other statistical methods. Results: 1. The sex workers tended to be less educated with mostly secondary school graduated.
2. 95.24% of female sex workers had more than two intimate partners, 73.81% had more than two abortions, and 88.11% had undergone vaginal plastic surgery. Significantly, all the female sex workers in this study had contracted venereal diseases before. 3. The sex workers did not show awareness in the "sexually transmitted diseases" and "how and when to use condoms" in the sexual knowledge category, however, significant awareness under aspects of "attitude toward medical treatment" and "attitude toward sexual love" under sexual attitude category was noticed. They also showed necessary awareness in the aspect of "using condoms" under safe sex category. Hence, female sex workers needed better understanding of safe sex practice.
4. The attitude toward sex was related to sexual knowledge and safe sex practice. Positive correlation was shown between sexual attitude and safe sex practice, and between sexual attitude and sexual knowledge. Conclusion: The relationship between sexual knowledge, sexual attitude and safe sex practice was important. No remarkable correlation between safe sex practice and sexual knowledge of female sex workers was found. An imperative positive correlation however discovered between sexual attitude and practice of safe sex, as well as a significant correlation between sexual attitude and sexual knowledge.
