21st INRC [Evidence-Based Practice Presentation] The purpose was to test the effectiveness of the self-care self-efficacy enhancement program (SCSEEP) in improving three bliss concepts, including life satisfaction, self-esteem and motivation in health behaviors among Chinese nursing home elders in Taiwan. This study used an experimental, two groups, and longitudinal research design. The 101 subjects were recruited and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 55) and a comparison group (n = 46). Subjects in the experimental group received the SCSEEP Program via nursing home staff. Subjects in the comparison group received care as usual. The SCSEEP program was derived from Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory. Activities used in the SCSEEP included performance accomplishment, vicarious experiences and verbal persuasion. Strategies used to recognize the performance accomplishment included: 1) staff and residents review self-care behaviors elders' self-care behaviors together, and 2) staff provide a positive feedback if elders improve in one or more ADL tasks. Strategy for vicarious experiences included: having staff and resident observe and discuss another resident's success in enhancing a self-care activity. Strategy of verbal persuasion was: staff provide verbal encouragement for efforts to do self-care activities. Results found that there was a significant positive correlation between life satisfaction and ADL performance (p<0.05), self-esteem and ADL performance (p<0.001) as well as levels of ADL performance and motivation in health behavior (p<0.01). Additionally, the repeated measures design revealed a significant difference between scores of four tests of life satisfaction (LS) (p<0.01), self-esteem (p<0.01), and motivation in health behaviors (p<0.01) in two groups of subjects. In conclusions, the SCSEEP is valuable for preventing the decline of three bliss concepts among Chinese nursing home elders in Taiwan. The most appropriate provider of the SCSEEP would be nurses and nursing assistants of nursing homes.
