Health promoting behavior and psychological symptom of the chronic schizophrenia Objectives: The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the relationship among health promoting behavior, psychological symptom, family support, and self efficacy of the patient with chronic schizophrenia in Korean. Design: A descriptive design was utilized to examine the relationship among health promoting behavior, psychological symptom, family support, and self efficacy of the patient with chronic schizophrenia. Population, Sample, and Setting: Data were collected over 6 month period on 226 chronic schizophrenia in Seoul, Korea. Variables: Study variables and instruments for data collection included the Health Promotion Behavior Scale, Psychological Symptom Scale, Family Support Scale, and Self Efficacy Scale. A pilot study was conducted to test the validity and reliability of all instruments with this population. Based on these results, instruments were adapted to the specific cultural needs of Korean. Methods: Data were using self- reported questionnaires through face to face interview by 4 research assistant, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Results indicated significant(¡?.05) positive correlation among health promoting behavior, family support, and self-efficacy. There was significant negative correlation between health promoting behavior and psychological symptom. Conclusions: Data from this study suggest that self efficacy, family support, and psychological symptom are significant influencing factors on health promoting behavior of chronic schizophrenia in Korean. Implications: These results have important implications for the development and testing of nursing intervention for the chronic schizophrenia. In developing nursing intervention for health promotion, the major influencing variables described above need to be carefully evaluated.
