Purpose: This presentation will focus on the challenges in launching a nursing program from the ground up (baccalaureate to PhD) for a faculty member. Background: An associate professor in the Program in Nursing Science at UC Irvine, who has taught in a variety of nursing programs across the country, is now embracing the unique challenge of juggling the many roles of nursing faculty in the development of a new nursing program. Description of the Undertaking: In addition to creating the infrastructure of a new discipline on a university campus and forming new research collaborations, faculty must also implement a range of courses, from didactic to clinical experiences for students. Outcomes/Conclusion: In these difficult economic times and with the shortage of nurse faculty, a founding faculty member will discuss how innovative one can be while trying to meet campus and discipline-specific mandates. She will also focus on the atmosphere that has been developed among the faculty in which open communication and discussion is very much encouraged in an effort to have all voices heard as this School of Nursing is developed.
