Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to describe the role of a faculty member and a postdoctoral fellow in starting a new School of Nursing. Background: Each member of a new nursing program has an important role to play in designing the future of the school. This presentation will highlight the experiences of two members of the founding team at the Proposed Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the University of California, Davis. Description of the Undertaking: The first postdoctoral fellow has the opportunity to promote visibility of the school through publications and research in the community. Also as a recent graduate of a doctoral program, the postdoctoral fellow has the unique opportunity to offer insight about specific curriculum elements to enhance fit with current students. The first faculty member has the considerable responsibility to offer her insight about curriculum design and the format of the school. An expert in public policy, the founding faculty member can offer knowledge about how to design a program that will create nurses equipped to care for the patient of the 21st century. Outcomes/Conclusions: The first postdoctoral fellow and faculty member will describe their personal experiences thus far, including their role in the Inaugural Design Summit with noted key leaders in nursing from around the country. They will also welcome discussion from other researchers and faculty members in the audience.
