The purpose of this research study was to examine the relationship of class size to the use of technology, educational practices and outcomes in web-based nursing courses within undergraduate and graduate student groups. Framework: The Billings Model (2000) was used to assess the educational practices and outcomes in web-based courses. The variable of social presence (Brownrigg, 2005) was added to the framework as an outcome. Subjects: The sample for this study was drawn from fully online courses, resulting in 1134 participants from 11 schools. 265 students were enrolled in undergraduate courses (BS, BSN, RN-BSN) and 863 students were enrolled in graduate courses (MS, MSN, ND, or PhD). Eleven percent of the students were male; 89 per cent were female. Methods: Two instruments were used for this descriptive study. The Evaluating Educational Uses of Web-based Courses in Nursing (EEUWIN), (Billings, Connors, & Skiba, 2001), a 46 item survey was used to ask participants to identify their agreement with statements about the use of technology, educational practices and outcomes in their web-based nursing course. The Social Presence Scale, a 13-item Likert-type questionnaire (Gunawardena & Zittle, 1997) measured the extent to which students were perceived as 'real' in their web-based nursing course. Analysis of variance was used to identify differences in the variables of the study and differences within undergraduates and graduates based on class size. Results: The findings for this study indicate that there are differences in the use of technology, educational practices and outcomes for class size. These differences varied for students in undergraduate and graduate level courses. Conclusions: Class size does have a relationship to the use of educational practices and outcomes in web-based nursing courses. Nurse educators should consider class size in their approach to designing and teaching in large enrollment web-based courses.
