The aim of this study was to develop an online nursing practice guideline document model that includes a comprehensive set of concepts to be useful throughout the guideline life cycle. A guideline document model was proposed using the Guideline Elements Model (GEM) with XML to better represent the various knowledge and information in nursing practice guidelines. The developed guideline document model can be depicted as a directed table with guideline document as the root. The major concepts in the model hierarchy below the upper category level are purpose, developer, intended audience, method of development, target population, testing, knowledge components, and evaluation. Each of these elements, in turn, comprises one or more additional levels of guideline constructs. The model developed in this study is comprehensive and expressively adequate to represent the various information contained in nursing practice guidelines. In addition, it can be used as a first step in translation paper-based, narrative guidelines into formats that can be electronically.
