The purpose of this study was to develop and test the psychometric properties of an age-specific (65 years and older) measure of fitness walking self and outcome efficacy, the Walking Confidence Scales 65+ (WCS65+). Based on an analysis of information provided by focus group participants (N=19) consisting of walkers age 65 and older the following themes were used for instrument development: habit and routine, healthy body, support, control of relapse and efficacy outcome. A pool of 50 items was generated to represent these themes. Sample selection criteria for this study included the following: age 65 or older, currently participating in an exercise walking routine, ability to read and write English, and living independently. Recruitment sites included independent living communities, community sponsored "health facilities" and shopping malls. Participants (N=126) initially completed the WCS65+ and a Fitness Walking Information Record. Two weeks after returning the initial WCS65+, participants (n=97) returned a second WCS65+. A total of 84 participants had a complete data set for both assessments. Item analysis resulted in a 12-item scale. A principal component factor analysis of the 12 items revealed two distinct factors: an 8-item self-efficacy scale and a 4-item outcome-efficacy scale. Factor loadings ranged from .47 to .87 with 62% of the variance explained. Corrected item-total correlations for the 8-item self-efficacy scale ranged from .47 to .70 (a=.87). Corrected item-total correlations for the 4-item outcome efficacy scale ranged from .69 to .83 (a=.90). Test-retest reliabilities for the self-efficacy scale (.666; p<.01) and the outcome efficacy scale (.653; p<.01) were moderate and in the expected direction. Pearson correlation between scales was .559, p<.01). The relationship between WCS65+ scale scores and Fitness Walking Information Record data is being assessed to determine construct validity.
