Purpose: This poster will present the methods and preliminary findings
of a qualitative study currently in the data collection and analysis
stage. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe the
transitional experience of women religious (nuns) from independent living
to assisted living.
Method: Currently, the sample consists of eight participants, over the age
of 65, living in an assisted living, nurse managed, care facility.
Established inclusion and exclusion criteria guide the sampling process.
Face-to-face interview are audio taped and transcribed verbatim using Word
software. A semi-structured interview guide using open-ended questions is
used to elicit the experience of transition. Interviews will continue
until data saturation is reached.
Analysis: Three researchers are undertaking data analysis. Transcripts are
analyzed independently for themes or pattern and entered into each
researcher's journal for further analysis. Final agreement on common theme
and patterns will be based on 100% agreement among researchers.
Relevance: The goal of this research is to understand the transition of
women religious into assisted living facilities. This research should
assist nurses, promoters of health, and organizational leaders of women
religious, to establish interventions that enhance positive transitions to
assisted living.
