The purpose of this paper is to define the unitary perspective and its implications for nursing theory development and research. The term unitary is used in many different ways. Here it refers to a particular view of wholeness. The human-universe process is a unitary phenomenon meaning that all-at-once the human with universe is ever-changing, unpredictable, and indivisible. This phenomenon guides nursing research that explores human experiences, pattern manifestation, and pattern recognition.
