Purpose: The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to describe the physical and emotional health of grandparent caregivers and to identify predictors of grandparent health status. Potential predictors included generalized stress, parenting stress, family support, and perceived benefits of support group attendance. Theoretical/Conceptual Framework: An adaptation of the caregiver stress model developed by Pearlin and colleagues served as the theoretical basis for the study. Subjects: A convenience sample of 50 grandparents raising grandchildren was recruited from grandparent caregiver support groups. Methods: The grandparent who was the primary caregiver was interviewed by telephone. The interview included questions from 5 instruments: (a) Family Support Scale, a measure of the helpfulness of support services for families raising grandchildren; (b) Parental Distress subscale of the Parenting Distress Index; (c) Life Stress Scale, a measure of generalized stress; (d) Short Form-36 Health Survey, a measure of physical and mental health problems; and (e) Child Behavior Checklist, a parent report of children's behavior problems. Data analysis will include the use of descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and regression analysis. AN: MN030183
