Title:
Managing Up Can Improve Teamwork in the OR
Author(s):
Smith, Sandra
Author Details:
Sandra Smith, BSN, RN, CNOR, Baptist Hospital East, Louisville, Kentucky, USA, email: ssmith1@bhsi.com
Abstract:
Poster presented at AORN's 58th Annual Congress: Holding each team member accountable for following policies and procedures and behaving professionally in the workplace should be the responsibility of all team members and not just the manager. A culture in which employees "manage up" is one in which we communicate in respectful ways and feel comfortable correcting negative behaviors or inconsistencies in patient care. Consistency and individual accountability can help to ensure patient safety.
