Abstract:
Poster presented at AORN's 58th Annual Congress: Earning CNOR Certification demonstrates an increased level of commitment to professional practice. Maintenance of the certification requires completion of more continuing education units than does simple licensure by the state in which one practices. It results in more informed care to patients, as practice knowledge base is more current. Initial inspiration from a poster at Congress in Chicago set the Board of Directors of the chapter in motion. While still in Chicago, M. Tapia of AORN was interviewed. She had been instrumental in the development of the online prep course for them, and she had traveled to a hospital site to deliver a prep workshop. She agreed to look into the possibility of presenting a workshop in San Jose, and we parted with dates "pencilled in," and agreement to continue the dialogue, especially as to costs and terms. As an Association of periOperative Registered Nurses Chapter in the San Francisco Bay area, 513 was in a unique position to be able to deliver a program to a diverse group of nurses seeking certification. In a relatively small geographic region, there are worldclass hospitals and universities, and hundreds of perioperative nurses. The idea was described to the chapter membership, who agreed, based on their present information, to defer to the Board for a decision after negotiating terms with AORN. It was looked at as an opportunity to provide an educational service to the nurses in the region, so it was not anticipated to be a revenue generator. At the same time, they did not want the chapter to lose money as a result of the venture. Two Board meetings, and many e-mails and telephone conversations later, a deal was struck and the workshop held. It was overwhelmingly successful, with 75 attendees. And, to our great joy, proved profitable. We were pleased to have been able to provide this service to our colleagues. Their patients will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this group of nurses committed to a higher level of professsional practice.
