Abstract:
Abstract presented at AORN's 58th Annual Congress: In the past five years, adult mesenchymal stem cell based tissue forms have been implanted in tens of thousands of patients. Clinical experience within this field of tissue regeneration has shown great promise for the treatment of many spinal, orthopedic, and trauma related conditions. With the recent introduction of many mesenchymal stem cell based tissue forms, it is imperative that perioperative professionals understand how to evaluate them in terms of preclinical science, appropriate intra-operative handling, tissue safety, clinical experience, etc. This session will focus on adult mesenchymal stem cells, provide a background of the science behind this exciting area of regenerative medicine, and discuss bone biology and healing, particularly in orthopedic and spinal surgery. Tools to evaluate and compare the rapidly growing varieties of adult mesenchymal stem cell technologies will be discussed, as well as a review of the most current clinical evidence available.
