Abstract:
Poster presented at AORN's 58th Annual Congress: Despite strict counting protocols, surgical sponges are unintentionally left inside patients after wound closure. These retained foreign objects (RFO's) are a potential source of morbidity for patients and a liability for care providers and institutions. Safety measures to prevent RFO's is a process that is poorly understood and undereported in the literature. To date, most of this data is retrospective and anecdotal. Preventative measures are limited to manual counting in most institutions. This large, prospective, multi-institutional study was designed to understand the current process instituted to minimize the risk of RFO's, determine the incidence of incorrect counts and RFO's, identify the potential risk factors associated with RFO's, and to evaluate radiofrequency surgical technology in preventing these sentinal events and impacting intraoperative efficiency and nurse confidence.
