Abstract:
Abstract presented at AORN's 58th Annual Congress: Perioperative nurses have a unique professional terminology, the Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS), developed by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). The PNDS is a clinically relevant and empirically validated standardized nursing language. The data set relates to the delivery of care in the perioperative setting at any point in time and is appropriate for use in any surgical setting. The PNDS task force has worked since 1999 to develop and refine the language. Building on previous efforts of AORN members to develop the Health Systems Data elements, the PNDS task force has worked for the past two years to identify and define the health system data elements. The health system data elements address the administrative concerns and structure data elements essential to surgical interventions. Members of the PNDS task force and AORN staff conducted a study to validate the work of the group and to complete the development of the contextual data elements of the PNDS health systems domain. The results of the validation study will be presented.
