Abstract:
Poster presented at AORN's 58th Annual Congress: The Perioperative Nursing Assistant (PNA) role is integral to the efficient function of the Operating Room (OR). There are schools that offer certified nursing assistant programs but none currently address or provide for the special needs and language of the OR. The PNA role has become a complex range of duties that is unique to the OR. The function of the PNA is room cleanup, room turnover, patient positioning, patient transport, specimen handling, protection of patient privacy, safe operation of equipment, and protection of the aseptic environment helps to promote the delivery of safe efficient perioperative patient care. We at The Methodist Hospital (TMH) recognized the PNA role as vital to the perioperative team and the need to provide the special skills set that is required to work in the OR. We have created a course for the PNA that educates and trains the PNA to the needs of today's complex surgical procedures and perioperative preparation. The classes are ten in number and range from aseptic technique to safe patient positioning. Upon completion of the PNA program, a certificate of completion is awarded the recipient, and recognition is given the recipient by management and staff.
