Abstract:
Poster presented at AORN's 58th Annual Congress: Texas Woman's University (TWU) in Houston has recognized the importance of the role of the perioperative registered nurse (RN) and has implemented a two hour elective for senior baccalaureate nursing students. This elective allows the nursing student to get a firsthand experience concerning the role of the perioperative RN. The Methodist Hospital (TMH) has hosted the elective since 2008 providing perioperative RNs as instructors for the didactic content and preceptors for the clinical portion of the course. This year, with 24 registered students taking the course, TMH adjunct faculty looked to other medical center facilities to help provide the clinical operating room (OR) opportunity for the students. St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital (SLEH) agreed to share the experience of introducing these students to the exciting world of the OR. Perioperative educators from both facilities taught the 15 hour didactic classes. TMH and SLEH staff RNs volunteered for the five hour simulation day with stations for the students to learn prepping, assessment, safety, scrubbing, gowning, gloving, handling instrumentation, and setting up a minor back table. This experience was positive for both students and preceptors. Preceptors enjoyed working together with staff from their sister facility sharing their knowledge and expertise with the students. Staff from both facilities gained new friends and respect for their perioperative colleagues working together. We found that through our collaboration, we were able to show the TWU students that no matter which OR facility we practice in, we speak the same language of perioperative patient safety.
