Abstract:
Purpose: This multicenter study involved 1081 nurses working in the Francophone Regional Health Authorities in New-Brunswick. It examined the present state of nursing research, and utilization of health information technologies in the workplace. A questionnaire was distributed; participation rate was 65%. Results: Nurses value nursing research, perceive a role in participating in nursing research, however, their experience is limited. They possess some knowledge with informatics, but not enough to undertake research projects. The younger the nurses, the more readily they participate in research activities, and have more competencies with informatics. The higher the education level, the more favourably nurses perceive their role as participants in research, and have interest and experience with various research activities. Post-RN certification produced comparable perceptions in regards to nursing research as level of education. Nurse administrators, educators and counsellors perceive nursing research similarly. Regional Health Authorities' support for nursing research is limited, and nurses would like to have more support. Most nurses are not aware of the available resources for nursing research in their workplace, as well as the established links with universities. Conclusion: Create initiatives and incentives that encourage nurses to participate in research activities, and improve their competencies in health informatics.
