Abstract:
As part of an overall program evaluation plan guided by a program logic model, a study to describe and compare student outcomes of Ryerson University's post-diploma RPN and RN degree completion program will be presented. The outcomes of interests are grades (clinical and non-clinical) and the acquisition of professional values. A secondary aim of the study is to describe the changes in professional values over time between the first and final terms of the program to better understand the developmental process that occurs through the educational experiences of the program. A mixed method, longitudinal, non-experimental descriptive design was used. The sample includes all full time students entering the program in 2006 and 2007 (approximately 80/year). Data collection includes in-class survey during Term 1, 2 and 4 using the Revised Professional Values Scale and focus groups asking about views on various professional values and experiences in the program to date. Data analysis includes descriptive statistics, t-tests to compare differences between the groups on study outcomes and demographic variables and qualitative descriptive analysis of the focus group data. Preliminary findings of the first cohort for Terms 1 and 2 will be presented.
