Evaluation of an Innovative Communication Technology in an Acute Care Setting

Abstract:
Introduction: Communication-related workflow impacts patient-centred practice. Innovative communications technology may enhance education by minimizing workflow disruptions and information exchange. The Vocera? Communication System is a voice-controlled technology that allows instant and hands-free communication using wireless radio technology. The purpose of this study was to compare communication patterns and efficiency, pre- and post-implementation of Vocera. Methods: Patterns of communication and time required for key communication activities were documented. Time: Ten Registered Nurses from the sample nursing unit were shadowed for a 12-hour shift before and after Vocera implementation. Time spent on key communication activities will be compared before and after Vocera implementation. Motion: Before and after Vocera implementation all nursing unit staff wore a pedometer. Distance traveled per 8-hour day shift will be compared for these two data collection periods. Results: A total of 159 events occupying 103 minutes were documented for the six key communication activities prior to Vocera implementation. Seeking a specific individual was the most frequently occurring event (n=42) and occupied the most time overall (33 minutes). The median time spent per activity was 22 seconds (range=1.1-513 seconds) with looking for assistance being the most time consuming. Post-implementation data and analysis will be presented.
