Abstract:
To develop a comprehensive picture of Nursing in Ontario, the Nursing Plans were implemented to provide nurse leaders with a snapshot depicting the current state of Nursing at the organizational, sector and provincial levels. One of the areas included in the Nursing Plans is data specific to nursing student placement experiences. Partnerships between Schools of Nursing and the various practice settings provide valuable learning opportunities for students to apply knowledge, develop skills, and begin the transition from student to novice nurse. Ongoing communication is required to ensure that the student placement experience continues to meet the needs of nursing students, faculty, clinical preceptors and the various practice settings. This presentation will share results from the 2006 Nursing Plans submitted by health care organizations within the Hospital, Long Term Care, Public Health and Community sectors in Ontario specific to their experiences providing student placements, the needs of preceptors, and the orientation needs of new graduates. Overall provincial results, as well as sector specific themes will be shared. The information presented will be of interest to nurses in all domains of practice as we strive to provide the most optimal learning experiences across diverse practice settings and sectors.
