Title:
Reliability and Validity Testing of the Eldercare Cultural Self-Efficacy Scale

Abstract:
Purpose: The increase in our diverse aging population has created challenges for nursing. Not only must nurses be able to deliver care to elders, but be sensitive to the cultural characteristics of elders of all ethnic backgrounds. Students' sense of self- efficacy is one factor that may influence their ability to provide culturally competent gerontological nursing care to elders. The Eldercare Cultural Self-Efficacy Scale (ECSES) is a modified version of the Cultural Self-Efficacy Scale (Bernal & Froman, 1987; 1993).The ECSES was developed to measure students' perceptions of confidence for performing certain gerontological and transcultural nursing skills to diverse populations. The specific aim of the study was to test the reliability and validity of the scale. Method: The 28 item ECSES was validated on a sample of 248 BSN students in Connecticut. Content validity was supported through the literature and judgments by a panel of five experts in gerontology and transcultural nursing. Psychometric analysis included: item analysis, principal factor analysis (PFA) with orthogonal rotation, and internal consistency reliability using Chronbach's alpha. Results: The majority of respondents were seniors (76%), female (94%) and Caucasian (82%). The mean age was 26. The PFA revealed a four factor structure (Assessing for Lifestyle and Social Patterns, Determining Cultural Health Practices, Determining Cultural Beliefs, and Dealing with Grief and the Losses Associated with Aging) that accounted for 61% of explained variance. Chronbach's alpha coefficients for the four ECSES subscales ranged from .82 to .95. Conclusions and Implications: Findings demonstrate the 28 item scale to be reliable and valid instrument for use in nursing education outcomes research to examine students' confidence in caring for elders of different ethnic groups. Determining levels of self-efficacy can assist nurse educators in the development of experiences to improve the quality of care provided to our quickly growing and diverse elder population.
