[NLN Education Summit Paper Presentation] A case study utilizing the US surgeon general's Family Health History Initiative is utilized to discuss the application of essential genetic/genomic concepts and knowledge to the provision of competent care given a patient's genetic background, including susceptibility and risk assessment. This knowledge provides the framework to discuss how genomic applications are improving patient outcomes and transforming the delivery of care.
