Abstract:
The ability to meet the health promotion needs of women from diverse cultures has been a major challenge for researchers and clinicians. This challenge exists in part because of the difficulty in defining culture and because many health promotion models are based on frameworks developed for the mainstream population. Overall, there has been limited attention to the cultural meanings that guide health promoting behaviors in minority women. Cultural variation has a profound effect on all aspects of health promotion efforts; thus intervention strategies must be compatible with the cultural and environmental context of the individual. Health promotion efforts across cultural groups can be facilitated by the use of culturally sensitive and competent models, interventions, and strategies. Cultural sensitivity implies a recognition and appreciation of the values, traditions, and beliefs of cultures other than one's own. Culturally competent models for health promotion for minority women guide the development of intervention strategies that are culturally meaningful and appropriate. This paper will summarize cultural considerations in health promotion for minority women across cultural groups, including the essential meaning of culture in health promotion efforts. Characteristics essential to culturally sensitive research including attention to communication, family and kinship networks, and access to and acceptance of medical involvement in health matters will be outlined. The paper will emphasize cultural considerations in the development and implementation of health promotion interventions in minority women. Strategies designed to promote health and enhance acceptance of culturally competent intervention efforts will be presented.
