Tales from the Crib: A Unit Council Story
Author(s):
Weaver, Barbara
Author Details:
Barbara Weaver, CCRN, RnC, Transport/Staff Nurse, Medical Center of Central Georgia, Macon, Georgia, USA, email: cweaver@pstel.net
Abstract:
Podium presentation, ANCC National Magnet Conference: Our 42 bed neonatal intensive care unit has grown exponentially in teamwork, evidence based practice changes and strength under the support and guidance of a motivated, visionary and outrageously strong nursing infrastructure. We would like to take you down our path of development from a small, defiant, unsure group of staff nurses to our new, goal driven, highly successful unit council sharing our successes and our struggles to accomplish things we would never have believed were possible. We would like to share our work in reducing the incidence of blindness from reductions in retinopathy of the premature, to our impact on the reduction of bowel surgery, VAP, negativity and staff vacancy rate. We have become a unit where mandatory overtime and short staffing are things of the past. Our Directors open door policy, role as our advisor and unparallel support has enabled us to make changes in practice, changes we made with goals we set that have changed the way we provide care, embrace our families and support each other and our community.
