Abstract:
Poster presentation, ANCC National Magnet Conference: The Wellness on Wheels (WOW) van grew out of a desire to improve the health of our community. February 2009 marked the debut of the WOW van. This van is managed and staffed by nurses who provide basic health screenings such as blood pressure, body mass index, height and weight, and education on a variety of topics. The van travels throughout the community to schools, churches, community outreach centers, senior centers, county fairs, and other events. Over 11 months the van staff met with over 12,500 members of the community and referred over 2,100 of them to various health care resources. The nurses staffing the van describe their experiences as energizing and very rewarding. Registered nurses have the opportunity to connect with individuals in a relaxed environment while encouraging wellness. The WOW van and nursing staff are a significant addition to preventative health care in the community.
