Abstract:
Poster Presentation: A Collegiate Nurse Intern Program that offers an opportunity for students to get a head start on their career, match knowledge with experience, and gain confidence in their practice yields a high recruitment of new graduates. Nurse leaders, in response to growing turnover and vacancy rates and use of contract labor, implement a unique program that appears risky from a financial perspective, but effective when the results show a high recruitment of graduate nurse, lowering the vacancy rate and the use of contract labor. This presentation outlines an evaluation of one institution's program over a six year period, providing an analysis of recruitment and retention statistics and the financial cost of this innovative program. Improvements in the quality of the program, which are made by obtaining feedback from the students, staff nurses, and nurse managers, have started to focus more on the professional development of the interns in an effort to yield more positive results.
