Abstract:
Paper Presentation: Research is intimidating to many nurses, especially for those who are not associated with a university or major teaching hospital. By taking a "just do it" approach to overcome apprehension, this 375-bed community hospital developed a system to use the body of knowledge available to nurses to improve patient care and nursing practice. Learn how this hospital began with simple steps and built on successes to utilize frontline nurses to develop evidence-based practice standards and to research best in class approaches to care. Begin by providing resources and support for nurses to learn how to delve into the world of research and literature review. By establishing a core group of staff nurses who are provided the time and structure, they become experts in challenging and changing patient care delivery. The hospital has successfully accomplished the integration of research and nursing practice evidence at the unit level without the use of a traditional shared-governance model. Examples include implementing a Handle with Care program to prevent injury to staff and patients; modifying oral care products and practices to decrease ventilator associated pneumonia; taking the national patient safety and quality goals to the operational level; modifying fall prevention strategies; and conducting research on the use of palliative care in the adult ICU setting. The hospital is also a recent recipient of a Robert Woods Johnson Foundation grant to investigate the transformation of the hospital's culture into one of nursing excellence.
