Title:
Faculty Practice: A Model for Partnership and Leadership
Abstract:
(41st Biennial Convention) Scholar Impact       The scholar designed the leadership project to facilitate a relationship between Valdosta State University’s College of Nursing (VSU CON) and the Lowndes County Partnership for Health Center (PHC) as a model for faculty practice and student education.  In addition, the scholar has engaged in various leadership development activities including: creation of the PHC Medical Advisory Board Committee; election to the VSU University Faculty Affairs Committee; and facilitation of a definition of the “scholarship of practice” for Tenure & Promotion decisions. Student/Faculty Impact             Two nurse practitioner faculty members now practice and precept nurse practitioner (NP) students at PHC as part of their faculty workload.  NP students are satisfied with development of their clinical skills and ability to meet specific course objectives. The PHC nurse manager precepts BSN and second degree nursing students who have generally been positive about their experiences. Organizational Impact             The partnership between the CON and PHC is a model for other faculty members to practice and educate students.  PHC is a new, dedicated clinical site for VSU CON students. Changes in VSU Tenure and Promotion criteria specifically applicable to nursing faculty members have been made.  The CON is represented on the  VSU Faculty Affairs Committee.
