Title:
A Tough Nut to Crack: The Acceptance of Social Media and Web-Based Apps in the Hospital Setting
Abstract:
(41st Biennial Convention) The promotion and use of social media and web-based applications in the hospital setting presents certain challenges for the nurse educator desiring to integrate their use in educational endeavors. The use of social media and web-based applications have been successfully promoted and used by the staff development educator by learning the management maze, use of communication skills, gaining the attention of upper management and forming alliances with departments outside of nursing. The staff development instructor has integrated and promoted change in the hospital setting by gaining acceptance and use of social media, wiki sites, and web-based applications at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) as a means of providing multi-modal online learning, continuing education, and professional networking. SIUH is a 714-bed tertiary care facility located on Staten Island, New York. In this presentation the staff development instructor will share her experiences and strategies for gaining buy-in from work peers, upper management and outside departments in the use of social media and web-based applications.
