Title:
Parent Participation in the Care of Hospitalized Children
Abstract:
(41st Biennial Convention) The purposes of this research were to compare the differences between preferred and actual parent participation in the care of hospitalized children and to determine the relationship between the parents’ preferred participation in the care of hospitalized children and parents’ age, children’s age, parents education, duration of parental care per day, number of hospital admissions, and perceived severity of the disease. The concept of parent participation of Schepp (1995) was used as the conceptual framework of the study. The purposive sample was 90 parents of hospitalized children who were admitted into pediatric wards of Ramathibodi Hospital between December 2008 and March 2009. Data were collected by means of The Demographic Data Form, The Parental Preferred Participation Questionnaire and The Parental Actual Participation Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Paired t-test, Pearson’s product moment correlation and Spearman’s rank correlation were employed in the data analysis.        The findings of the study revealed that preferred parent participation in the care of hospitalized children was at a high level, but their actual participation was at a moderate level. There were significant differences between  preferred and actual participation in the care of hospitalized children (t = 4.685, p < .001). Furthermore, the children’s age was negatively related to preferred parent participation in the care of hospitalized children with statistical significance, while parent’s year of education and duration of parental care per day positively related to preferred parent participation in the care of  hospitalized children with  statistical significance  (r = -.30, p < .01;           r = .21, p < .05; r = .36, p < .01, respectively).          It is recommended that nurses should be aware of preferred parent participation and factors related to their preferred participation taken into consideration so as to promote parents’ participation in the care of hospitalized children.
