Abstract:

Poster presented on Saturday, September 22, 2012

The 2012 Region 11 Conference was hosted in honor of our 30th anniversary as a chapter. A general plan was presented at the 2011 Region 11 Conference, and endorsed by our colleagues. The conference title chosen was: "Advancing Patient Care Through Translational Science", and honored the mission and vision of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI): learning, knowledge, scholarship and professional development in service to promoting the health of world's people. Chapter board members met to solidify the plan, identify individual strengths/areas in need of support and to engage senior leadership as mentors. Board members from 5 local chapters participated as committee members. Colleagues from across the region contributed to a formal chapter leaders' meeting which preceded the conference. Some of the observed benefits include: leadership development among board members; recruitment of new members and future chapter board members,  member and student participation as volunteers, greater visibility of the chapters involved, collegiality/networking among/across local/regional chapters about future conferences and related scholarly projects, monetary donations from our founding members to support chapter awards/scholarships. The 10 month conference planning project represents a fulfilled opportunity for significant professional growth, and addresses the critical need for board development among nurses with far reaching implicaitons for the larger STTI organization and the profession at large.
