Abstract:

Purpose: To evaluate the relationships between learning approach (deep approach or surface approach) to students’ attitude and motivation towards the use of technology and cooperative learning in geriatric nursing subject.

Methods:  This study will be conducted as quantitative research and target to Year 3 nursing bachelor students in Macau towards the use of technology and cooperative learning in geriatric nursing subject. The target population will be enrolled in Year 3 BSN nursing students who have to take the “Geriatric Nursing” course in 2013. This study will adopt purpose-sampling method, two classes of students out of total sixty will be included into this study.

The “Geriatric Nursing” course with technology and cooperative learning will have:Conventional lecture, group learning; and Web-based learning activities which include on line quizzes, discussion, web-based problem-based studying. Students in this study will have the right to access the electric resource at home or anywhere.

Data will be obtained from three sources: questionnaires (student deep or surface learning approach questionnaire, attitude and motivation) students’ academic performance results for the course, and focus groups to collect students feedback and thought about this programme.

Data will be analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science version 17.0. Descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation and liners regression will be used. 

Ethical considerations: There are no anticipated risks to participating in this study. All personal information will be kept confidential and identification numbers will be used in place of names on study records. 

Results:  As this is ungoing study, this study will gain more insight into the relationship between students’ approach to attitude, and the academic performance towards the use of technology and cooperative learning.

Conclusion: It is hoped that the use of technology or cooperative learning in nursing education as a teaching method will be an effective approach to fostering deep approach to learning and also have understandings the relationship with students' attitude and motivation.
