Abstract:

Teaching the Teachers- A Two-Day Simulation Focused TeamSTEPPS Master Training Program for an Interprofessional Group of Hospital Leaders.

Healthcare facilities all over are embracing AHRQ’s TeamSTEPPS program. TeamSTEPPS programs are free, however class locations are limited, and require 3 person teams to travel. We designed a Simulation Focused TEAMSTEPPS Master Training program on site for 32 leaders in medicine, nursing and hospital operations in our Integrated Center for Advanced Simulation (ICAMS) lab. Our scenarios included standardized patients in our falls with injury scenario, high fidelity manikins in CODE blue scenarios, and a mix of high fidelity and “confederates” in our obstetrical emergency scenarios. All scenarios reflected a real safety issue from our hospital risk office.

The program demonstrated to leaders the benefits of teaching in a realistic environment with psychological safety. On Day 1 the leaders were taught basic skills and progressed from being a student in a lecture to staff in interprofessional teams, challenged to use TeamSTEPPS skills in high risk situations. Every simulation room exercise was debriefed and coached by experienced facilitators. On Day 2 the leaders practiced being the facilitator and teacher in simulation.

This class provided an exciting interactive way for hospital leaders to use TeamSTEPPS techniques and personally experience the anxiety a team member may feel when faced with high risk situations.

The class received excellent feedback and our leaders have come to rely and support one another in teaching the hospital staff TeamSTEPPS programs.
