Abstract:

Nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners need to meet the needs of the learner while accounting for their generational differences and learning style preference. The NPD practitioners identified the need for education related to the use of halo traction in the pediatric patient population and collaborated with orthopedic experts to develop an educational video series to address the gaps in nursing knowledge. This video series needed to be available to all nurses 24 hours a day regardless of their location which lead to the development of a staff nurse educational video channel on YouTube. This inter-professional collaborative effort resulted in staff being able to access educational content 24 hours a day and from any technological platform of their choice. Each video is created with the intent of breaking down the care of patients in halo traction into short clips. As a result of nurses watching the videos, there has been a noticeable empowerment and embracement of the nursing practice related to the care of the pediatric patient in halo traction. From the success of this video series NPD practitioners are now receiving request for additional videos as the popularity of the YouTube channel grows. Staff nurses feel empowered to access the content when it works for them and in doing so are able to provide, just in time, evidence based care to pediatric patients in halo traction.
