Abstract:

Regional orientation for Perioperative Services was revised to reduce in-classroom orientation time prior to on-unit orientation in order to increase employee and manager satisfaction while decreasing orientation cost. The new program was also designed to increase efficiency for NPD practitioners needing to create a scalable orientation program in advance of hiring for a large expansion. A standardized curriculum was developed to meet the needs of the eight job roles across seven distinct units that participate in regional orientation. Interdepartmental trainings were arranged to expedite orientees’ schedules while ensuring that hospital and regulatory requirements were being met. NPD practitioners partnered with unit leaders to standardize orientation competencies across like units and employed innovative strategies for moving orientation competency assessments into an electronic format. This increased NPD practitioner efficiency by eliminating manual grading of assessments and easing employee file maintenance.

Regional orientation was reduced by 16%-22% depending on the staff role, representing an average orientation cost savings of $300-$800 per employee. The orientation evaluation surveys show increased staff satisfaction. Ongoing evaluations continue to provide feedback for continuous improvement efforts.
