Abstract:

The organization’s Blueprint for Quality and Patient Safety is the framework driving initiatives for improvements in clinical care, safety, and the patient experience across the continuums of care. The Unit-Based Clinical Leadership (UBCL) team structure operationalized this framework by promoting an interprofessional approach to achieving patient safety and quality across the organization. Their efforts underscored the need for IPE and development. The director of the university’s office of CME and the corporate director of Nursing Professional Development championed formalizing the continuing interprofessional education structure. This initiative was embraced by the highest levels of the organization’s educational and clinical leadership teams.<br /> Collaboratively, the Department of Nursing Education, Innovation, and Professional Development and the University’s Office of Continuing Medical Education have (1) developed a conjoint planning document, (2) created a process of conducting and reviewing IPE programs, and (3) conducted a system-wide training for planning, designing, and implementing IPE activities with course directors, faculty, and nurse educators. The strategic guidance and alignment with other relevant centers and programs in education, professional development, quality and safety, and leadership across the educational and clinical continuum is provided by the organization’s Interprofessional Development Council.
